5U MFOS Synth Modules

With thanks to our friends at MFOS & Synthcube, these wonderful analog synth projects are once again available from the UK. For many years, Soundtronics supplied the PCBs, kits, panels and technical support to customers across Europe and beyond. Now trading as Sonic Synths, the PCBs are manufactured by us under licence to the original PCB designs.

Over time, we will add kits of parts, components and panels based on demand. If you can't find on our website what you need for your MFOS project, contact us and we will endeavour to assist.

Some projects may also be suitable for Eurorack applications largely depending on PCB size as the supply voltages are also +/-12V except for a few battery powered Lo-Fi noises boxes.

If you want to use these modules on +/-15V, check out the MFOS website for guidance, where possible, it may require component value changes.

  • MFOS 10 Step Sequencer PCB

MFOS MFOS 10 Step Sequencer PCB

A bare PCB for the MFOS 10-step sequencer The MFOS Ten Step Analog Sequencer is a great first sequencer project. The main idea of a sequencer is to provide an automatic means of sequentially stepping through a series of adjustable voltages to drive a VCO (or any other voltage controlled device). Additionally, gate and trigger signals are generated as the sequencer steps to each new voltage. A sequencer can control the frequency of an oscillator (or several oscillators) to produce repeating tonal patterns, or arpeggios. This sequencer design is simpler than the MFOS 16 step sequencer and has fewer steps and features. Nevertheless, it is still a fun synth-diy project. A sequencer is a mainstay of any modular analog synthesizer. Two to Ten Step Sequences Reset At Count and Stop At Count options External Start (great for arpeggios) Start/Stop, Step and Reset functions. Gate selectable on/off for each step Great for a first sequencer project. Three CV Outputs. Portamento on CV3 output. High/Low Output Range. NOT EXTERNALLY CLOCKABLE (Kind of an anti-feature) Supplied without components or instructions. For build instructions see the MFOS website. • MFOS 16 Step Sequencer Analogue PCB

MFOS MFOS 16 Step Sequencer Analogue PCB

"Daisy Chaining" more Analog PCBs Looking to expand your 16-channel analogue sequencer then you can drive more than one analog sequencer board from one digital board. This is accomplished by chaining the QA, QB, QC, and QD connections from the digital sequencer board to one or more additional analog sequencer boards. The illustration below shows this. Each additional analog PCB requires it's own set of coarse and fine pots and a new set of CV output jacks and portamento control. These are mounted on a panel and wired just like the original set of coarse/fine pots, CV out jacks and portamento pot. The result is that you can now control separate modules with a synchronized 16 step sequence. You still only get 16 steps. Adding analog PCBs does not result in more steps. Adding more analog boards lets you do things like: have a 16 step sequence of chords (controlling separate VCOs) or control a VCF with one set of controls and some oscillators with the other set. You can imagine a ton of cool applications. Supplied without components or instructions. For build instructions see the MFOS website. • MFOS 16-Step Auxilliary Gate/LED Driver Bare PCB

MFOS MFOS 16-Step Auxilliary Gate/LED Driver Bare PCB

This bare PCB is designed to work with the MFOS 16 Step Sequencer and supports both another set of "active step" LED indicators and another set of gate switches if that's something you want or need to build. So when you decide to expand your sequencer with another MFOS 16 Step Sequencer Analog board you'll want to add "active step" LED indicators and this board is perfect for that. Or maybe you want to build the Vari-Clock module into a separate cabinet because your sequencer cabinet is full... again you'll want to add "active step" LED indicators and this board is perfect for that. Or let's say you want another set of gate switches and another gate and trigger output and "active step" LED indicators... guess which board is perfect for that... BINGO! This is the very board. The board can be used in these two modes: 1) as another set of both LEDs and gate/trigger switches and 2) as just another set of LEDs. Supplied without components or instructions. For build instructions see the MFOS website. Soundtronics (Sonic Synths) MFOS Projects are authorized by Music From Outer Space

  • MFOS VC Reverb Module Bare PCB

MFOS MFOS VC Reverb Module Bare PCB

A bare PCB for the MFOS Voltage Controlled analogue reverb unit Voltage controlled reverb level Voltage controlled original level Supplied without components or instructions, Soundtronics stock all components needed to build these modules. Erratum The official MFOS PCB differs slightly from the instructions / PCB layout on the MFOS website. The VC Reverb was the last product from Ray Wilson before his passing and a few anomalies remain with the PCB. We have identified what we believe are the only differences which are a few components to form a high pass filter R9, R39, R40 & C27. Also C1 and C5 see further down the page.   R40 (100k) is solder on the rear of U1 between pins 3 & 4.   R9 (10k) is soldered to C27 (22nF) before soldering into the R9 position. It is important the resistor and capacitor are soldered exactly as per the photo below. R39 (1k) is soldered from the casing of the phono socket to the junction of R9 and C27.   Finally, D4 is shown as Z2 on the PCB silk screen and with an incorrect orientation. Photo below shows D4 in its correct position.     Gary J from Florida also pointed two other differences that we did not mention in the erratum above which relate to C1 and C5. C1 is a 1uF tantalum capacitor in the schematic and parts list but the PCB silk screen only shows a non-polarised capacitor. C5 on the PCB shows it being polarised but is actually a 100nF non-polarised ceramic capacitor.   When soldering in C1, make sure the +v side of the capacitor is facing towards U1.   The spacing for C5 is too narrow so simply form the leads to suit, it does not matter which way around it is soldered in.   Supplied without components or instructions.
